Up and out early this morning to find water standing 5" deep just in- and outside my front door.
Sloshed over to the Rialto to see it there, flowing right into the canalside cafés. Within an hour, it was all gone, taken out with the tides.
I did learn there are, as in this building, 1 meter square, 3-sided catch basins, built just inside many doorways. The sides are about 6" high, so the water comes in, yes, but is trapped there and then flows out again. Lots of places are too prone to high water to have these, and just do the best they can: watch, wait, then mop and squeegee it out.
Venice is all about water.
